Aaliyah Dana Haughton
(January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001)
Story by Matthew Shack
Don't stand beside my grave and weep, For I'm not there, I do not sleep, I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond's glint on snow, I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn's rain. When you awaken in morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush, of quiet birds in circle flight, I am soft stars that shine at night, Don't stand beside my grave and cry, I am not there. I did not die.
--Melinda Sue Pacho
God is wonderful.
Not only did he create the heavens and Earth...He also created, Aaliyah. If a picture of Adam & Eve ever existed? Eve would have looked exactly like her.
As talented as any artist her age (22), Aaliyah was a star. But, sometimes God calls his angels to return home.
The name Aaliyah is Swahili for "the highest" or "most exalted"... PERFECT.
A rising talent whose life ended WAY TO SOON. Her passing was the most shocking experience for us since the loss of Tupac.
Do you remember where you were when you heard the news?
I remember where I was.
I was in L.A. chillin' on the couch watching T.V. and they played one of those stupid EYEWITNESS NEWS teaser commercials about an R&B star and a plane crash.
Then, they made me wait a half an hour to find out what happened.
ANYTHING FOR THE TELEVISION RATINGS. (foul)
I was shocked and I got a little sick to my stomach. Why her?!!! (Read about Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes' reaction to Aaliyah's death) May issue of "The Flow"
She didn't deserve to die. But, then I though about it..."Who am I to question God's will?" God created her and God took her home. I prayed on it and I accepted it.
She sang like the birds, soft and free.
Listen to "At Your Best (You Are Love)", and then walk outside and listen to the wind.... sound familiar?
Aaliyah was a lot of things to a lot of people.
She was a good actress.
A once in a lifetime talent.
And, SHE WAS FINER THAN THE DAY IS LONG!!
She was our sister.
We watched her grow up.
We heard the ALL of the rumors of her and "The Kelly" and wondered what "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number" was really about. I'm just happy that he didn't drag her name into his bullsh-t.
While I was writing this article on her,
"If Your Girl Only Knew" begins to play on the radio.
She must be here.... in fact, she is here.
I shouldn't be surprised and neither should you.
She never left.
We love you, Aaliyah.
