Funky Worm (1972)

Ohio Players

Listen to "Funky Worm" below.

This month's installment of "Amplified" is about a 'worm'...

"He's the funkiest 'worm' in the world."

The Ohio Players' 1972 comedic smash hit, "Funky Worm" is one of Hip-Hop's greatest and most-sampled songs.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Erick Sermon, NWA, Snoop Dogg, Ruff Ryders, Redman, Public Enemy, Too $hort, and Xzibit have all "borrowed" the synth solos as well as, other bits 'n pieces from this legendary song.

Some of them ....MORE THAN ONCE!

The greatest examples of "Funky Worm's" usage are in"Jump" (Kris Kross), and "Ain't No Future In The Frontin". (MC Breed)

Formed in Dayton, Ohio as The Ohio Untouchables in 1959 ,"The Players" members included Robert Ward (vocals/guitar), Marshall "Rock" Jones (bass), Clarence "Satch" Satchell (saxophone/guitar), Cornelius Johnson (drums), and Ralph "Pee Wee" Middlebrooks (trumpet/trombone). Gary Webster (drums) and Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner (lead vocals & guitar) were added in 1964.

Ohio Players are on the short list of all-time greatest funk bands. Hits include "Fire", "Skin Tight", "I Want To Be Free", "Fopp" & "Sweet Sticky Thing".

Pop "Funky Worm" into the CD player at your next family reunion and listen to your old 'ex-pimpin-player',"Uncle Ray Lee" say...

"Now...THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!!"..."What YOU know about, Ohio Players??"
